India's 2024 General Election Results: A Surprise for the Ruling Party

A Narrower Victory for Prime Minister Modi

Early results indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a third term in office, but with a far narrower margin than expected. Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed victory on Tuesday, but the final results are still being counted.

The general elections were held in India from 19 April to 1 June 2024 in seven phases. Votes were counted on 4th and 5th June 2024, and the results have been a surprise for many. Exit polls had suggested that the BJP would sweep the elections, but the actual results show a much closer race.

The BJP won 303 seats out of 543, which is a decrease from the 303 seats they won in 2019. The Indian National Congress (INC) won 193 seats, which is an increase from the 52 seats they won in 2019. Other parties and alliances won the remaining seats.

The results are a humbling for Mr Modi, who had campaigned on a promise of "vikas" (development) and "rashtravaad" (nationalism). The BJP's loss of seats is likely due to several factors, including the rising cost of living, unemployment, and the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
