Early Life and Education
Garland was born on November 13, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Harvard College, where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Social Studies. He then pursued his legal education at Harvard Law School, where he graduated magna cum laude once again and served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review.
Judicial Career
Garland began his legal career as a law clerk for Judge Henry J. Friendly of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He subsequently worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in the District of Columbia and as a special assistant to the Watergate Special Prosecution Force. In 1995, President Bill Clinton appointed Garland to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, where he served as a judge for over 20 years.
